Serve Healthy Smoothies For Kids - How to Get Started

Serve Healthy Smoothies For Kids

How can you get your kids to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables? It's sometimes hard to do, specially when your kids are choosy with the food they eat. Giving them smoothies could be a good idea to let them drink something very healthy. It looks and tastes like a milk shake and as long as they enjoy the taste even if it has veggies (you don't have to tell them that for starters) they will drink it. Do you think you can serve healthy smoothies to your kids?

How do you get started?

Start with simple fruit smoothie recipes for kids. Although green smoothies are yummy and healthy for everybody, they are not the best option when it comes to getting your kids started on smoothies. Try this simple fruit smoothie recipe first because kids love this one. Mix up some frozen strawberries, banana, and some of vanilla yogurt.

As they get used to and start to love smoothies, you can slowly lessen the amount of sugar. It’s easy to do it. You could put less banana and add more berries. Change the sweetened vanilla yogurt for plain yogurt.

Once they've become addicted to smoothies, you can start introducing veggie smoothies to kids. How do you make green smoothies for kids so that they will like it? Keep in mind the following suggestions:
  • Begin with a few greens and lots of fruit.
  • Make a cool name for the smoothie like “Green Monster Slush” to help make these green drinks more appealing.
  • Keep the pieces small and be sure that the smoothies taste good before giving them to your kids.
  • If you want to make a green smoothie sweet, put apple juice instead of water or coconut water.
  • As with the yogurt smoothies, you can slowly lessen the amount of juice and fruit you put to make it healthier and less sweet.
This same trick works for adults who aren’t a big fan of green smoothies. Your main objective should always be to have them drink the smoothie and get those extra greens in their diet. If it means that you need to add half a cup of apple juice to make it tasty, that’s better than serving a bowl of cereal or a plate of chicken nuggets and fries.

Here's a couple more tips to increase the chances that your kids will love to have their smoothies.
  • Start off with their favorite fruits, veggies and foods.
  • If your family is a big peanut butter fan, mix up berries, bananas, milk and a spoon of peanut butter.
  • If your kid’s favorite fruit is peaches, begin with peach smoothies, adding in other fruits and vegetables over time.
With a few trial and error, you can make your kid a smoothie fan. They'll be adding lots of fresh fruit and veggies to their diet in no time.
